Is it worth driving further for cheaper petrol?
A practical guide to deciding whether a cheaper petrol station is worth the extra miles.
Work out the price gap
A 2p per litre saving on a small top-up may only save pennies. A 7p to 10p gap on a larger fill can be meaningful, but only if the detour is short enough.
Account for the return journey
The fuel used getting to the station and back should be counted. FuelRank treats the journey cost as part of the effective per-litre price.
Use direction, not just distance
If a cheaper station is already on your route, the effective detour can be close to zero. If it is in the opposite direction, a cheap pump price may be a false economy.
